Editorial Review for Highbar – by Lucy Cohen Blatter

In Short
Don't let the rundown entrance, old elevator or surly bouncer keep you from enjoying this urban bar and bi-level lounge, located on the penthouse floor of an unremarkable midtown building. Half indoors and half outdoors, the airy space features a patio with bar and grill, sleek wooden furniture and comfy canopied daybeds (generally reserved for the bottle service crowd). A large, enclosable room (with retractable roof) has plenty of banquettes and private nooks where beautiful New Yorkers and tourists alike can take in the breeze--and the scene.

Hits: A plethora of standing plants, a working grill and the notable outdoor space give the sense of a tropical locale far away from the buzz of Times Square.

Misses: Until you get to upstairs to the penthouse, the building itself looks and feels shabby--an unwelcome precursor to the difficult door policy and $16 cocktails.

Fun Fact

The owner of Highbar, Greg Brier, also owns Aspen and the nearby hot spots D'Or and Amalia, both located in the Dream Hotel.

Food Served

Grilled burgers, hot dogs and cold crudite are available.

First off, I received HUGE attitude from bully's in suits from Walmart at the door. This was at 6pm for happy hour! The outside looks like a garage and the inside decor is cliche'. The rooftop was breezy and would be quite lovely, if it weren't for the horrific view. One of my friends was so turned off by the bouncers that they decided to leave. I will not be going back nor recommending it to ANYONE I know.

Pros: rooftop

Cons: attitude from Walmart suits

First impression when I received an invite was much better than when I actually went. First off meat head at the door asked where I lived before I was let in, "oh you live right next door in this big building, ok you can come in". Then upstairs its full of girls that still think they are in their HS click and guys with pink shirts and khaki pants. Not impressed with this crowd. Drinks were reasonably priced. If there was a better crowd I would roll back and since I can see the roof top from my balcony its that convenient.

Pros: Roof Top

Cons: Bouncer, Crowd

A modern and comfortable outdoor oasis where the view is of buildings, not beaches.  See the full editorial review.
